Look Inside Of The Barclays

The Barclays
Course: Liberty National Golf Club Location: Jersey City, New JerseySince: 1967Yardage: 7,419Par: 71Field: 125Cut: Low 70 plus ties after 36 holesTee Off: Thursday BST 12:15

Overview

The Barclays is the first event in the FedEx Cup Playoffs featuring the top 125 players from the season long FedExCup points list including eight of the top ten players in the world.

Next week the top 100 golfers will go on to the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston. The following week the top 70 players will progress to the BMW Championship in Chicago.

After a two week break the final 30 players atop the FedEx Cup points list will fight it out at the Tour Championship in Atlanta where a $10,000,000 prize fund awaits the winner. Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh won the first two FedEx Cups.

Westchester Country Club was home to the Barclays from 1967-2007. Last year the event was held at Ridgewood Country Club and this year it moves to Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey.

Last Time Out

Vijay Singh collected a tournament record fourth career victory last year at Ridgewood Country Club with a sudden death playoff win, defeating Sergio Garcia and Kevin Sutherland.

At the first playoff hole Singh made a do or die birdie putt after Garcia sank his birdie attempt and Sutherland was eliminated. Singh two putted for birdie on the second playoff hole to capture the title.

In his three previous title defences of the Barclays Singh withdrew in 1994, finished tied for 20th in 1996 and missed the cut in 2007.

Course

The Liberty National course was designed by 1992 U.S. Open winner Tom Kite and Bob Cupp and opened for play in 2006. Tom Kite also designed the Trump International Golf Club, home to this year's Puerto Rico Open presented by Banco Popular.

The par 71 course can play as long as 7,419 yards. It sits alongside the Hudson River with views of Manhattan two miles away and the Statue of Liberty less than 1,000 yards from the 18th green.

Liberty National is a unique style of golf course. With over 5000 trees there are some holes which give it parkland course look but other holes which run alongside the river give it a Scottish links feel.

The course features undulating fairways well protected by bunkers, long wispy bluegrass rough in places and small greens with multiple run off areas.

Weather

Forecast is good for Thursday and Friday with unsettled weather due over the weekend with a 40% chance of thunderstorms.

Conclusion

A new course for all the players and one that should test all the golf clubs in their bag. The players will need to shape the ball off the tee and distance will be an advantage this year as recent rain has left the course playing soft and the ball is not rolling out. Accurate iron play and a good strategy with a creative short game will be the keys to success.

Liberty National provides a good solid all round test with an emphasis on quality ball striking and short game skills.

When to Use What Drivers

Filed under: , by: golf clubs showcase

Driver is the club that will provide you with a longer shot than wedges, irons or woods. A driver can only be used when teeing off on a hole. You don't necessarily have to use a driver when teeing off, however. Because there are many drivers from which to choose it is important that you know when to use what kind of drivers.

Longer Holes

Par 4 and Par 5 holes are two of your longest yardage holes so it's important to use a long driver. Long drivers with a more flexible shaft are preferable because you can get more power behind a swing. Typically long drivers will have a heavier head.

Medium Holes

These consist of par 3 or the shorter par 4. There is no particular name for the medium-range drivers; they are simply referred to as drivers. Check the shafts for stability. A medium-range driver should have a stiffer staff, but not completely stiff. Stiffer shafts are heavier, which in turn doesn't allow you to put as much speed on the swing.

Hybrid Drivers

There are drivers that have the characteristics of a medium-range driver and a long driver. Some of these clubs will have a stiffer shaft and a wider head, or some will have a very flexible shaft and medium-sized head. Some golfers use these drivers to take the guess work out of selecting a club to use. These drivers can be used on any hole. You will need to adjust the swing speed.

New G15 – a truly worthy successor

Filed under: , by: golf clubs showcase

It is hard to believe that Ping could come up with something to better the rightly popular Ping G10 driver but they have come up trumps with the new G15 – a truly worthy successor. I have been lucky enough to already get to try out the new Ping clubs and I have not been disappointed. A big fan of the G10 I was dubious if I would feel the need to upgrade to this newer version but everything from looks to performance has convinced me that a good club has got even better. The club sits behind the ball very well and is visually confidence building – the half crescent alignment system has been slightly modified in the G15 to look slightly more modern and fit in with then new red colour scheme – giving a solid look to address. The 460cc head still looks like a driver should do (I think it is slightly deeper at the back than the G10) and the club is extremely well balanced. In terms of performance it cannot be faulted – a solid feel and good sound at impact translate into a penetrating and long ball flight with impressive forgiveness on off centre hits.

Adam Scott Talks About Titleist AP2

Filed under: , by: golf clubs showcase

What do Adam Scott's final-round 61 and three-shot victory at the Qatar Masters and 2007 European Tour Rookie of the Year Martin Kaymer's first win a week earlier have in common? Both were fired with new Titleist irons. Adam Scott won with the Titleist Forged AP2 irons while Martin Kaymer played the Forged ZM irons in taking the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship by two.

Adam Scott, the Australian professional golfer talked about his feeling about Titleist irons:

Titleist is replacing every iron in their set with the new AP1, AP2, ZB, and ZM irons. Gone are the well-liked 695 (in CB and MB variations). Gone is the 735.CM. Gone are the 755s and the 775s. Five models are being replaced by four, three of which are forged, and one of which aims to bring incredible feel and performance to the "aspiring golfer" crowd.

They say there's no accounting for taste, but my own personal opinion is that the irons offer a nifty throw-back look. I don't personally care for the "overdone" graphics we see on a lot of clubs, and I'm willing to say that the Titleist AP1 and Titleist AP2 come close to overdoing it a little. The lines don't bother me - in fact, I like the lines - but the black/grey and black/red striping and the words in that area are what push the iron close to the edge for me. And this isn't the first time Titleist has "dressed up" up the backs of their irons. The very 755 and 775 irons these clubs replace also had decorative backs with different colors, materials, and lettering.

The introduction of the AP1 and the AP2 mark a bold step for Titleist: tungsten sole weights, flashier graphics, and elastomer cushions are all new to their irons. I've played Titleist irons for quite a long time, always going with the muscleback variations or, on occasion, blended sets.

A man was stranded on a desert island for 10 years. One day a beautiful girl swims to shore in a wet suit. Man: "Hi! Am I ever happy to see you."! Girl: "Hi! It seems like you've been here along time. How long has it been since you've had a cigarette?" Man: "It's been ten years!" With this information the girl unzips a slot on the arm of her wet suit and gives the man cigarette. Man: "Oh thank you so much!" Girl: "So tell me how long its been since you had a drink?" Man: "It's been ten years" The girl unzips a little longer zipper on her wet suit and comes out with a flask of whiskey and gives the man a drink. Man:"Oh..thank you so much. You are like a miracle"! Finally the girl starts to unzip the front of her wet suit and asks the man leadingly, "So tell me then, how long has it been since you played around??" The man looked at her and said excitedly: "Oh, my God, don't tell me you've got a set of golf clubs in there too?"

Ping's New Fruit: Ping G15 Irons

Filed under: , by: golf clubs showcase

Karsten who is Ping pioneer, venturing to golf clubs with passion, engineering skills and a desire to seek innovation and demand quality has revolutionised the golf game.

Half century passed, ping has promoted what is called "our most comprehensive product launch in history" to celebrate the 50th anniversary.

"Our engineering team continues to research and analyze the needs of all golfers," explains Ping Golf Chairman John Solheim.

"Our newest families of clubs address the specific performance goals of these players and they are designed accordingly.

"The G15 Series appeals to the majority of golfers who rely on the easier-to-hit attributes of a maximum forgiveness, higher launch type of club.

"With the i15s, a lot of players will be attracted to the added control and versatility they offer. The i15s will deliver the forgiveness we all need, but they've been engineered to provide the workability that a lot of more skilled golfers look for in their clubs."

When Mark Calcavecchia recently built the PGA Tour record of nine consecutive birdies at the Canadian Open with the G15 driver in his bag. The highest quality ball-strikers understand the appeal of the entire range.

Ping will produce a absolute winner and you will enhance your confidence with the driver. The G15 could be the club you've always been looking for.

Ping G15 Irons

The new G15 irons from Ping have been designed with the game improver in mind.
Like the Rapture V2's, they offer maximum forgiveness but are a subtler proposition aesthetically.

Released to supersede the G10 range they feature a wide sole which enables them to sit comfortably behind the ball and a large offset which positions the hands forwards.
This provides those who may have trouble getting the ball airborne with a confident feeling that this can be achieved and this indeed proved to be the case.

There was consistent feel throughout the irons and those shots that came out of the toe (due to a dodgy swing!) still managed to make their way airborne and carry over a forgiving distance.
One pleasant surprise was that during the backswing the club head felt weighted in such a way that I was aware of its position and so found it easier to control my current golfing curse, the over-swing.

Ping have released another winner, one that the mid- to high-handicapper will love, and although there are never any guarantees that a new set of irons will reduce your handicap I believe that these clubs will provide you with a very good chance of doing so.

Cleveland Launcher driver

Filed under: by: golf clubs showcase

The revamped Cleveland Launcher driver has a 21 % larger clubface than previous Launcher models to increase forgiveness and keep even off centre hits flying long and straight. A horseshoe shaped weighting system in the sole of the club combines with a 23 % thinner crown to improve the moment of inertia and lower the centre of gravity to increase the stability of the club.

We have enjoyed following the progress of the Launcher range as each new driver has improved on the previous model and this new offering is no exception. In our tests, the increased forgiveness was evident on off centre hits and the traditional design helps mask the size of the clubhead, which is large and deep. Compared to the Cleveland HiBore Monster XLS range, the Cleveland Launcher driver is more of a players club as the higher moment of inertia means it is easier to work the ball with this club. It is also priced a little cheaper than its sibling and with the excellent Fujikura shaft it is a very competitive driver for the price. The Cleveland Launcher driver comes with the Cleveland Eee Zee Grab headcover as standard and these not only look great but are much easier to get on and off than many of the headcovers on the market today.

Ping i10 or G10 iron set for me

Filed under: , by: golf clubs showcase

So went to the local golf joint to get fit for a new set of ping irons. I'm having trouble deciding which to buy.I'm about an 18 handicap, sort of a repectable beginner looking to improve a great deal in the next few years. I'm left handed so they only had a 7 iron of each club for me to hit into a net. I hit the G10 pure everytime, the i10 i could feel a little mishit now and then, but knew for sure when i hit one on the screws.im playing the largest clubs known to man, the big bertha 05' irons, so even the g10 is smaller than im used to.bottom line is i want one of these sets BAD now...they both felt great to hit.The club fitter guy said the g10 for sure. just easier to hit and no real down side when compared to i10.

my thoughts:

G10 - for sure would enjoy them right away, but wouldn't force me improve my ball striking over time. might outgrow them in a few years.i10 - more mishits, may struggle to adjust at the beginning, but would assist me to become a better golfer over time.I would not out grow them for a number of years. could learn to work the ball both ways without fighting a huge offset (can draw big berthas very easy, difficult to hit a cut).i'm 50/50 at this point. any thoughts? it wouldn't be the end of the world to buy g10s and sell them in a couple/three years and move to more of a player iron at that time.

5 Most Important Things to Consider When Choosing Set of Golf Clubs

Filed under: , by: golf clubs showcase

1. First of all you have to be honest with yourself in deciding what skill level you’re at. Are you a beginner just starting out, an intermediate weekend golfer, or an expert golfer who plays all the time? This is critical because there are different types of equipment designed to help every level of player. Playing with expert golf equipment if you are just starting out will only hurt your game.

2. Stay within your spending limits. You have to know what type of budget you are working with. Golf can become very expensive if you don’t stay within your means. There is equipment and accessories designed for every budget, you just have to know where to look.

3. Figure out your strengths and weaknesses. Do you know hook or slice the ball? Are you a long or short hitter? Do you sink many puts when you have to, etc.? You must know these qualities of your game. When you go to your local shop or golf pro it will be easy for them to get you fitted correctly if you know this information.

4. How often do you play? Are you a weekend golfer or an addict who plays all the time? This will determine what golf clubs and accessories you should purchase. Don’t go out and spend a fortune on complex equipment and other things if you only play the game on the weekend with your buddies. On the other hand if you travel all over competing and playing, you are going to need the quality equipment that allows that.

5. Finally make sure you do your own research. Read golf magazines, articles, newspapers, and anything else you can get your hands on. Go to demo days at your local club or driving range and any local golf shows. Check online at manufacturer’s websites and other informative golf club websites. You can find anything online. Doing research is the key to getting what you want.

If you use these 5 simple tips to choosing golf clubs it will be simple for you to get fitted with exactly what you need. So go out and get those brand new clubs you have been thinking about for while.

The fastest way to lower your score is to master the ability to focus.

Filed under: , by: golf clubs showcase

Ninety percent of golf is mental. Oh heck, make that 95%! Arnold Palmer stated, “The toughest 6 inches in the game of golf is between a player’s ears”.

Most golfers tend to think they must practice more, find a new instructor, buy more videos, get the swing right, change those golf clubs. But one of the often overlooked and most important mental aspects of the game is focus.

Now you want to make sure you focus on the result you want. In golf the shot is determined by your level of concentration. You’ve likely just rushed right in and played shots without concentrating. No wonder the ball ended up going haywire!

It’s better to make ten focused swings than 100 quick, thoughtless ones. Your swing will naturally break down when you’re fatigued. So be sure to take a break when you’re practicing. Brain breaks give your mind and body a chance to implement what you’re learning.

One way to practice the art of focusing is to light a candle and stare into the flame, only thinking of the flame. Every time your mind starts to move to any other thought, bring it back to the flame. Think of the dancing orange colors, how they melt inside of each other.

The first time you do this, you might be hard –pressed to last for 3 minutes. Work up to 20 minutes, and your ability to focus on anything will have improved immensely. You’ll be able to take this enhanced skill to the golf course.

When you’re playing, just think about the next shot. During down time, allow your mind to relax and wander for a few minutes. Don’t try to concentrate the entire game, or you’ll get very fatigued, very quickly. Save the mental workout for thoughtful shot decisions and center on what shot you’re going to play next.

Also, keep your cool and behave in an emotionally controlled manner. You will perform more effectively. In the great game of golf, emotions soar and fall quickly. You can go from totally happy to totally ticked off in no time at all. In fact, the feeling of anger is actually a series of reactions that happen in just 1/30th of a second.

Stop it at the first spark. The important thing is to figure out what is really making you angry. Think of the grand scheme of life and how today is just a speck. Your golf game is a speck on a speck. It helps to minimize the situation and look at the big picture of what’s really important in life.

Master the mental art of focus, and you’ve got 95% of the game of golf all figured out!

Stunning New Ping i15 Driver Offers Tour Inspired Performance

Filed under: by: golf clubs showcase

Aimed at the better players the new i15 driver from Ping looks set to become a serious contender in the performance driver market – the first time Ping have added to their G range in an attempt to lure players whose primary interest is performance not forgiveness.

At first the club takes some getting used to visually, with a black 460cc Titanium head looking slightly intimidating but this is clearly a result of the players who Ping are aiming at with the i15. Looking smaller and rounder than its G15 counterpart you can believe this has been developed on the feedback from Tour Players but if you have the confidence and a slightly more powerful swing speed then this club certainly delivers.

The TFC 700 shaft is designed for better players and together with the club head technology delivers a long, powerful and penetrating ball flight. A serious performance club it is still provides forgiveness on off centre strikes but this club is very much for the better player and one that will become a serious contender in this market.

Ping G15 Driver Continues Tradition
